Beginner fencers need to have some basic fencing equipment to get started, but it’s important not to invest too much before you become familiar with your personal style and preference. Safety is of the utmost importance, so the proper clothing and protection is a must. For weapons, the requirements are a little different. Beginners can start with the following:

  • Fencing knickers
  • Tall socks
  • Cross trainer shoes
  • Fencing jacket
  • Underarm protection (Plastron)
  • Rigid breast protection for females
  • Fencing mask free of dents, holes, or other damage
  • Glove that goes at least halfway over the forearm for weapon hand

Fencing Weapons

When it comes to weapons, it’s best to see if you can rent or borrow one until you settle on your weapon of preference. Otherwise, you could find yourself investing in something you aren’t really going to use. Talk to your local fencing coach to see what is available. Be sure to try them all, even if you already try one and find that you like it. You may be more comfortable or skilled with one than the other. Your weapon
