It happens to the best of us. We work hard, we train, we have our ups and downs, and then one day we wake up and just sort of feel burnt out. All of the sudden, just the thought of getting in the car to go to fencing practice feels like a huge chore, you lack focus, and you spend every minute there thinking about what you’ll do after.

You still love fencing. So what gives?

In all honesty, you probably need to shake things up a bit. Here are a few ideas.

Help with Coaching

Talk to your own coach about opportunities that may exist to help newer fencers. You should never start coaching on your own without permission, but most coaches will encourage you to help those who are just starting out, especially if you can do so in a supervised environment. New fencers are FULL of energy. Working with them may just remind you of something that sparked your interest when you first started.

Socialize Outside of Class

The same old routine will bring the same old results. We all get busy from time to time. Pick a date and get some of your closest fencing buddies together to go out for pizza, ice cream, a bowling outing, or something else fun. You may even want to get everyone together to watch a classic fencing movie — whatever makes you all happy. Socializing outside of your regular fencing classes will help you to feel more connected — a sensation you’ll take right back to your training sessions in the future. 

Talk to Your Coach

Have an honest conversation with your coach. Let him know if you feel stuck, bored, or frustrated. Believe it or not, most of the coaches you work with have felt the way you do at least once in their careers. They’ll definitely have tips and tricks to help you feel the love again.

Take a Short Break

We’re not saying you should quit fencing (yikes – we’d never say that). We’re saying that there are times when it’s just best to take a step back, break out of your regular routine for a while, and focus on yourself and your mental health. It’s totally okay to do that. Just make sure you, again, talk to your coach. Make a plan with a start and end time for your “vacation” so you don’t get too sidetracked.

Everyone needs a break or a change of perspective from time to time. You’ll always have the support of your fencing peers and coaches. All you have to do is communicate.
